Morning Psalm

Psalm 150

Musicians with trumpets, harps, and timbrels play while dancers move across a temple courtyard, with a lamb and a white dove nearby and birds overhead.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, let everything that has breath praise You. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 150, that I may join heaven and earth in praising Your excellent greatness through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 150

1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.” (Psalm 150:6)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law This short Psalm leaves no corner of life outside praise. "Praise him for his mighty acts" (v. 2). We have often been silent when we should have praised, and loud for ourselves instead. Breath that will not bless the LORD is breath turned inward.

The Gospel "Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD" (v. 6). You have breath this morning because God gave it. In Jesus He has done mighty acts for you: the cross, the empty tomb, Baptism that joins you to Him. Your praise is not a performance to earn His favor. It is the glad answer of one already redeemed.

Prayer Lord, I confess my silence and my self-praise. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Thank You for breath and for redemption. Put Your praise on my lips today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Not every morning feels like a day for loud cymbals. Grief, shame, or plain tiredness can close the mouth. The Psalm still calls "every thing that hath breath." Under trial it may help to begin with a small praise: one mighty act of God in Christ, named aloud, until the heart catches up.

Prayer Faithful God, when praise feels hard, give me breath and a word of thanks for Jesus. Join my small voice to the praise of Your people and of all creation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
