Evening Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Gracious Lord, as this day ends, send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 112, that I may fear You, delight in Your commandments, and find in Jesus the light that rises in the darkness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 112
1Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
Consider even rereading in another translation.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.” (Psalm 112:4)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law "Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments" (v. 1). We have not delighted greatly. We have been afraid of bad news, slow to give to the poor, and quick to guard our own. Measured by this Psalm, our hearts are often unsettled.
The Gospel One Man fits this Psalm completely: Jesus, whose "righteousness endureth for ever" (v. 3). He gives that righteousness to you. In Him the promise holds: "Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness" (v. 4). Because He is "gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous" (v. 4), your heart can be fixed, "trusting in the LORD" (v. 7), even as night falls.
Prayer Merciful Father, I confess that I have not delighted in Your commandments as I ought and have feared what the news may bring. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Thank You for His righteousness, which endures for ever and is mine by faith. Fix my heart on Him tonight. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
Evening can be when hard news feels heaviest: a phone call, a test result, a headline. The Psalm says of the one who fears the LORD, "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD" (v. 7). Under trial it may help to rest that promise on Christ, whose heart was fixed for us all the way to the cross.
Evening prayer Lord Jesus, light in my darkness, when evil tidings come, fix my heart on You. Keep me and those I love through this night, and let me rise trusting in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
