Morning Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Lord, You take pleasure in Your people. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 149 this morning, that I may sing You a new song with all Your saints in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 149
1Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
Consider even rereading in another translation.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“Sing unto the LORD a new song” (Psalm 149:1)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law The Psalm ends with judgment: "To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people" (v. 7). God's judgment is real, and none of us could stand under it in our own strength. We are often proud rather than meek, and slow to praise the King who made us.
The Gospel "For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation" (v. 4). God takes pleasure in you, not because you are beautiful in yourself, but because He clothes you with the salvation Christ won. The sword the church carries now is the Word of God, which brings both judgment and forgiveness. And "this honour have all his saints" (v. 9), including you, washed in Baptism.
Prayer Lord, I confess that my heart is proud and my praise is small. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Beautify me with Your salvation, and put a new song in my mouth this morning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
It can be hard to sing a new song while the old troubles are still here. The Psalm says the saints "sing aloud upon their beds" (v. 5), even in the place where worries keep us awake. Under trial it may help to begin the day by praising Him anyway, because He takes pleasure in His people.
Prayer Lord, when this day is heavy, keep a song of praise in my mouth. Let me rejoice in You, my King. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version.
