Evening Psalm

Psalm 93

A regal figure with a white beard sits on a golden throne above the clouds, holding a scepter over the earth below.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD, You reign, clothed with majesty. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 93 this evening, that I may rest in Your rule and Your sure testimonies in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 93

1The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

2Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

3The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

4The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

5Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.

Consider even rereading in another translation.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty” (Psalm 93:1)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm hears how "the floods have lifted up their voice" (v. 3), and the waves are loud. We often treat the noise of the world as if it were in charge, and we forget that "holiness becometh thine house" (v. 5). We have not always honored His house or His Word.

The Gospel "The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty" (v. 1). He "is mightier than the noise of many waters" (v. 4). Jesus showed that rule when He calmed the sea, and He showed it most on the cross and in His rising. "Thy testimonies are very sure" (v. 5). His promise of forgiveness for you is sure too, and the floods cannot wash it away.

Prayer O LORD, I confess that I have feared the floods more than I have trusted Your reign. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Let me rest tonight in Your sure Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Evening can bring the loud waves of the day back to mind. Under trial it may help to set them beside the Psalm's steady word: "Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting" (v. 2). The One who reigns is the One who loves you.

Evening prayer Lord, as night falls, I rest under Your reign. Quiet the floods around me, and keep me in Your sure Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
