Morning Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Lord God, all creation praises Your name. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 148 this morning, that I may join the angels, the stars and all Your saints in praise through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 148
1Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
2Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
3Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
4Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
5Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
6He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.
7Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:
8Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:
9Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
10Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:
11Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:
12Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:
13Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.
14He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.
Consider even rereading in another translation.
You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:
KJV (Max McLean) · ESV (Max McLean) · NIV (dramatized)
You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.” (Psalm 148:5)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law Everything God made is called to praise Him, "for he commanded, and they were created" (v. 5). Sun, moon, hail and stormy wind all fulfill His word. Yet we, made in His image, are often the ones who fall silent or praise ourselves instead. We have not given the LORD the glory due His name.
The Gospel The Psalm ends with a gift: "He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him" (v. 14). God has raised up a horn of salvation for us in Jesus Christ. Through Him you are among those "near unto him" (v. 14), forgiven and brought close, with every reason to praise.
Prayer Lord, I confess that I have been slow to praise You and quick to praise myself. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Open my lips this morning, that my mouth may show forth Your praise. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
When our own voice feels weak, it can help to remember that we do not praise alone. Under trial it may help to notice how wide the choir is: "Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth" (v. 11), young and old together. Your praise joins a song that never stops.
Prayer Lord, when I cannot find the words, let me join the praise of Your whole Church. Your name alone is excellent. In Jesus' name, Amen.
