Evening Psalm

Psalm 19

Young David sits on a great rock at dusk with a scroll on his knees and his hand on his heart, a lyre beside him and his sheep resting below.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, the heavens declare Your glory and Your Word is perfect. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 19 this evening, that Your Word may cleanse me and make me wise through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 19

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

2Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

3There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

4Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

5Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

6His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

8The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

10More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

12Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

13Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

14Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” (Psalm 19:1)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law God's Word is pure, and it shows us ourselves: "Who can understand his errors?" (v. 12). At day's end we cannot even name all our sins. David prays, "cleanse thou me from secret faults" (v. 12), and asks to be kept back "from presumptuous sins" (v. 13).

The Gospel The God who set the sun in its course, "as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber" (v. 5), is also our Redeemer. David calls Him "my strength, and my redeemer" (v. 14). Jesus is the Bridegroom who came for His Church and paid to set us free. In Him God's Word does its good work: "The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul" (v. 7). His Word is "sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb" (v. 10).

Prayer Lord, I confess my hidden faults and my proud sins. Cleanse me for Jesus' sake. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When God seems silent, creation still speaks: "Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge" (v. 2). Under trial it may help to step outside tonight and look up. The same Lord who keeps the stars keeps you.

Evening prayer Lord, as night falls, keep back Your servant from sin. Be my strength and my redeemer through the night. In Jesus' name, Amen.
