Morning Psalm

Psalm 122

Glad families of pilgrims with baskets, palm branches, and a lamb walk up a stone road in the morning toward the walls and temple of Jerusalem.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You gather Your people into Your house. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 122 this morning, that I may be glad in Your house and pray for the peace of Your Church through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 122

A Song of degrees of David.

1I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

2Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

3Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:

4Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.

5For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.

7Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

8For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

9Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law David rejoices to go to the LORD's house, yet our hearts are not always glad when the call to worship comes. We can treat God's house as a duty or neglect it altogether. The Psalm calls us to "give thanks unto the name of the LORD" (v. 4), and we often forget.

The Gospel Jerusalem "is builded as a city that is compact together" (v. 3), and in Christ God builds His Church the same way, one people gathered around His Word and Sacraments. There He speaks peace to you: "Peace be within thy walls" (v. 7). Jesus is the true temple, and through Him you are welcome in the house of the LORD. You can say with David, "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD" (v. 1).

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have not always been glad to come into Your house. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Give peace to Your Church, and make me glad to hear Your Word and receive Your gifts. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When the Church seems divided or weak, it can be hard to love her. Under trial it may help to keep praying with David, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee" (v. 6). For the sake of brothers and sisters in Christ, we may still say, "Peace be within thee" (v. 8).

Prayer Lord, when Your Church is troubled, keep me praying for her peace. Bless my congregation and all who gather in Your name today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
