Evening Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Lord, You have been favourable to Your people and forgiven their iniquity. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 85 this evening, that I may hear the peace You speak in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 85
To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.
1LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
3Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.
4Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.
5Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
6Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.
8I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.
9Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
10Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.
13Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.
Consider even rereading in another translation.
You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:
KJV (Max McLean) · ESV (Max McLean) · NIV (dramatized)
You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“Mercy and truth are met together” (Psalm 85:10)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law The Psalm asks, "Wilt thou be angry with us for ever?" (v. 5). God's anger against sin is real, and the people know they have turned to folly before. We too end many days having wandered, and we need Him to "Turn us, O God of our salvation" (v. 4).
The Gospel "Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin" (v. 2). God has done it, and He promises more: "he will speak peace unto his people" (v. 8). At the cross "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other" (v. 10). There God's justice and His love meet in Jesus, and His peace is for you tonight.
Prayer Lord, I have turned again to folly. Forgive me for Jesus' sake, and speak Your peace to me. Revive me, that I may rejoice in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
At the end of a hard day, it may feel as though God is distant or displeased. Under trial it may help to listen, as the Psalm does, "I will hear what God the LORD will speak" (v. 8), and to rest in the forgiveness He has already spoken over you in Christ.
Evening prayer Lord, as this day ends, cover all my sin and speak peace to my heart. Keep me through the night. In Jesus' name, Amen.
