Evening Psalm

Psalm 47

A joyful crowd on a rocky hilltop lifts faces and hands in praise under a bright sky, banners lifting in the wind.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You are the great King over all the earth. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 47 this evening, that I may praise Christ, who has gone up and reigns for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 47

To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.

1O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

2For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

3He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

4He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

7For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

8God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

9The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

Consider even rereading in another translation.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“God is gone up with a shout” (Psalm 47:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law "God reigneth over the heathen" (v. 8), and "he is a great King over all the earth" (v. 2). Yet we often live as if we were our own kings, and we sing His praises without understanding or not at all.

The Gospel "God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet" (v. 5). Christ who died and rose has ascended, and He reigns for you. "He shall choose our inheritance for us" (v. 4). Your inheritance is not left to chance. The King of all the earth has chosen you as His own, and you can rest tonight under His rule.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have tried to rule my own life. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Teach me to sing Your praises with understanding, and keep me under Your gracious reign. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When the world seems out of control, it can be hard to believe anyone is King. Under trial it may help to end the day with the Psalm's words, "God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness" (v. 8), and to entrust tomorrow to Christ, who reigns.

Evening prayer Lord Jesus, You reign over all things. Watch over me and those I love this night, and keep us in Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
